Chip Shortage Dents Passenger Vehicle Sales In November

Domestic sales of both cars and two-wheelers fell last month though due to completely different reasons even as low demand from small transporters impacted recovery in the commercial vehicle segment, industry officials said on Wednesday.

Passenger vehicle makers said they could not meet a strong consumer demand as a global shortage of semiconductors continued to impact production while two-wheeler makers blamed rise in acquisition costs after transition to Bharat Stage-VI emission standards along with economic impact of the second wave of Covid-19 in ruralareas for a slump in sales.

Industry estimates that around 246,000 passenger vehicles were sold in the local market last month, down 14% from an estimated 286,800 units sold in November 2020.
