Global Trade Needs Better Rules to Ensure Gender Fairness

A rising tide may not lift all boats when it comes to how the gains from international trade are distributed among men and women.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies is urging trade negotiators to expressly take gender into account when crafting their agreements, an approach that jibes with efforts underway at the World Trade Organization to make international commerce and development policies more inclusive.

“There are many challenges that women face to reap the benefits of trade,” said Anabel Gonzalez, one of the WTO’s incoming deputies-director general.
